Char Dham YatraWhen a pilgrim heads towards Uttarakhand in the western Himalayas, they choose to go on a chardham tour, one of the most spiritually significant journeys in the country. A chardham yatra is a religious journey to four Hindu pilgrimage destinations - Yamunotri (3,322 m), Gangotri(3,048 m), Kedarnath (3,581 m) and Badrinath (3,124 m). Steeped in mythology and legends, these destinations give the traveller an opportunity to take a living lesson on Hinduism, its rituals, customs and age-old traditions. Devotees undertake this tedious journey into the Garhwal Himalayas not only to purge their sins but also to free themselves from the cycle of birth and death. According to Hindu traditions, the yatra to chardham should begin from left to right in this order : Yamunotri > Gangotri > Kedarnath > Badrinath.

The whole Uttarakhand region is blessed with bountiful supplies of nature. So, as you make this religious journey, you also get to experience a pristine flora and fauna in the Himalayan region. In addition, the region gives you an opportunity to enjoy a host of adventure sports including river rafting, trekking, mountaineering, fishing, wildlife safari and mountain biking among others. The Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand generally begins in the month of May and ends till October every year. September is the best month both for the yatra as well as for soaking up the natural abundance in the region.

Rafting
The sport of white water river rafting calls for a triumph over the swift swirling river as it gushes past spectacular mountains. It is practiced mainly in the upper reaches where the water is wild and white as it froths and foams, crashing against narrow gorges, rocky outcrops and falls at deep gradients. Sandy beaches line the river at intervals, allowing river rafters to pull up alongside. The slopes on either side are covered with oak, pine spruce and fir, with the occasional village and its terraced fields dotting the landscape. Wild-Life can be sighted at a distance, especially spotted deer, monkeys, leopard, while multi-hued butterflies flit among flowering bushes. Spiritual retreats and ashrams overlook the river and add to the spiritual experience. Suitable and best season for rafting is September to June.

Camping
Evenings at the Camp: Loosen up in the evening with the hip swinging ‘n’ singing session, complete with bonfire at the camp beach. Or participate in one of the campfire games. And if there's a musician in any of you, there's always the option of carrying your instrument and creating your own ambience. Then there is always getting involved in Levitation, Knots, Plank Bridge and Boston Lap games to name a few of the campfire games.

Accommodation
is in Alpine tents with a living area of the size of 10 x 12 feet which have a centre table and two beds with mattresses and sleeping bags. Each unit is weather proof and well ventilated with roll up windows.

Trekking
At a reflex level, trekking is a physical challenge: a simple desire to pick a path and measure up to the terrain and the elements. The adventure component adds the spice of uncertainty, raising the stakes for you to test yourself in unfamiliar territory. On a deeper level, trekking is a bridge between ancient lifestyles: the fixed vision of a settler counterbalanced by the transient motion of a nomad. As an evolution from a simple walk into a more self sufficient venture, trekking requires simplification, a reduction to portable basics, and implicit trust in your ability to define what you need to live.

Season
Because of the vastness of the terrain and altitude difference, trekking trips can be undertaken the whole year round. Treks range from low altitude treks in winter to the crossing of high passes in summer when the snowline recedes, It is also possible to combine all three-river running, trekking and mountaineering. The conventional trekking periods preferred are mid-April to May-June before monsoon and after the rains in the months of September-October-November
